Abstract: »In this chapter, I examine the repercussions of a series of highly emotional insults involving indigenous and mestizo women in Santafé de Bogotá during the first decade of the 17th century. I believe it is extremely important to study the binding relationship between language, society, and culture.
The cases I discuss here provide a way to reflect on the meanings of honor, dignity, enmity, and feelings among the native ladino population already integrated into the urban logic of the New Kingdom of Granada. In these cases, I detected outsiders from the Audiencia of Quito.
From the judicial processes housed in the General Archive of the Nation of Colombia, I extracted and analyzed not only the terminology used to offend, but also the acts and gestures that led to verbal insult, and rape as a heinous crime.
The methodological perspective of this work is the cultural history of language and emotions, which are part of the history of culture and everyday life. From this angle of knowledge, I propose a new approach to the topic of social conflict and the responses of indigenous and mestizo women in their urban interaction.« (Source: Article)
